Why Dubai Poses Elevated Parasite Risk

Most parasites have a temperature-dependent lifecycle โ€” cold winters interrupt or slow their development, providing a natural seasonal reduction in many temperate countries. Dubai's warm, humid climate means parasites can remain active and reproduce year-round, requiring consistent, uninterrupted prevention rather than seasonal treatment.

Fleas

Fleas are the most common external parasite in Dubai. They reproduce rapidly โ€” a single female can lay up to 50 eggs per day. Crucially, only 5% of a flea infestation is on the animal โ€” the other 95% (eggs, larvae, pupae) is in the environment. Once you see fleas on your pet, you have likely had an infestation in your home for weeks.

Ticks

Several tick species are present in the UAE. Brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) are the most common. Ticks transmit serious diseases including Ehrlichia, Anaplasma and Babesia โ€” tick-borne diseases that cause severe illness and can be fatal without treatment. Tick activity is highest in areas with grass and vegetation.

Intestinal Parasites

Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms and Giardia are common in Dubai. Many can be transmitted to humans (zoonotic risk), including children. Puppies and kittens are especially vulnerable.

Heartworm

Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is transmitted by mosquitoes and causes potentially fatal damage to the heart and lungs. It is present in the UAE. Monthly preventive medication is far safer and more affordable than treatment, which is complex and carries significant risk.

Building Your Prevention Plan

The most effective approach is a year-round, multi-parasite prevention protocol tailored to your pet's lifestyle and risk factors. Our team will design the right combination product โ€” many modern options protect against fleas, ticks, heartworm and intestinal parasites in a single monthly treatment.
