Why Dubai Poses Elevated Parasite Risk
Most parasites have a temperature-dependent lifecycle โ cold winters interrupt or slow their development, providing a natural seasonal reduction in many temperate countries. Dubai's warm, humid climate means parasites can remain active and reproduce year-round, requiring consistent, uninterrupted prevention rather than seasonal treatment.
Fleas
Fleas are the most common external parasite in Dubai. They reproduce rapidly โ a single female can lay up to 50 eggs per day. Crucially, only 5% of a flea infestation is on the animal โ the other 95% (eggs, larvae, pupae) is in the environment. Once you see fleas on your pet, you have likely had an infestation in your home for weeks.
- Signs: Scratching, hair loss, 'flea dirt' (dark specks in the coat), skin irritation, anaemia in severe cases
- Prevention: Monthly spot-on treatment or chewable tablet; treat ALL pets in the household simultaneously
- Environmental treatment: Vacuum thoroughly (and dispose of bag immediately), wash bedding at 60ยฐC; consider household flea spray
- Fleas are the intermediate host for tapeworms โ if your pet has fleas, also treat for tapeworms
Ticks
Several tick species are present in the UAE. Brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) are the most common. Ticks transmit serious diseases including Ehrlichia, Anaplasma and Babesia โ tick-borne diseases that cause severe illness and can be fatal without treatment. Tick activity is highest in areas with grass and vegetation.
- Signs of tick-borne disease: Lethargy, fever, loss of appetite, pale gums, weight loss, bleeding tendencies
- Remove ticks promptly: Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick remover tool. Grasp close to the skin surface, pull upward steadily โ do not twist or crush. Disinfect the bite site.
- Prevention: Monthly or 3-monthly chewable tablets (isoxazolines), collar (Seresto) or monthly spot-on
Intestinal Parasites
Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms and Giardia are common in Dubai. Many can be transmitted to humans (zoonotic risk), including children. Puppies and kittens are especially vulnerable.
- Deworming schedule: Every 2 weeks from 2 weeks old until 12 weeks; then monthly until 6 months; then every 3 months for adults
- Giardia: A protozoan parasite causing diarrhoea, particularly common in pets from kennels, shelters or with outdoor access to contaminated water
- Diagnosis: Fecal examination โ bring a fresh sample to your appointment
- Prevention: Avoid stagnant water, raw meat diets, faecal contact; regular faecal testing for high-risk pets
Heartworm
Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is transmitted by mosquitoes and causes potentially fatal damage to the heart and lungs. It is present in the UAE. Monthly preventive medication is far safer and more affordable than treatment, which is complex and carries significant risk.
