Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about veterinary care at OC Pets โ€” from what to expect at your first visit to how we handle emergencies.

Your pet's first consultation includes a full physical examination from head to tail, a review of their medical history, a discussion of any current concerns, and a personalised health and care plan tailored to your pet's species, age and lifestyle. Depending on examination findings, we may recommend diagnostic tests or follow-up procedures.

Yes. Our emergency team is available every day of the week. We handle all acute and life-threatening conditions including trauma, toxin ingestion, respiratory distress, seizures, urinary blockages and post-surgical complications. Call 044 366 388 immediately โ€” we can advise over the phone whether your pet needs to come in urgently.

We issue official health certificates for international pet travel. Requirements vary significantly by destination country. Book an appointment at least 10โ€“14 days before your travel date โ€” we will guide you through vaccination requirements, microchip verification, deworming timing and all documentation required for your specific destination.

Walk-ins are welcome for emergency cases. For routine consultations and non-urgent care, we strongly recommend booking in advance to minimise your waiting time and ensure the most appropriate veterinarian is available for your pet's specific needs. Book online or call 044 366 388.

We primarily care for dogs, cats and small companion animals including rabbits and guinea pigs. Please call ahead to confirm availability for exotic species. All patients receive the same high standard of care.

Surgery duration varies significantly by procedure. Routine spay or neuter typically takes 30โ€“90 minutes. Complex orthopaedic or internal procedures may take 2โ€“4 hours. Your surgeon will discuss the expected timeline, anaesthetic protocol and post-operative care plan during the pre-surgical consultation.

Please bring any previous medical records or vaccination certificates, your pet's current medications (bring the original packaging), and a recent stool sample if your pet has been experiencing digestive symptoms. For puppies and kittens, bring any documentation from the breeder or rescue organisation if available.

Adult pets benefit from at least one comprehensive wellness examination per year. Senior pets (7+ years) benefit from bi-annual check-ups to catch age-related changes early. Puppies and kittens need more frequent visits during their first year to complete vaccination series and monitor development.

Modern veterinary anaesthesia is very safe when supported by pre-anaesthetic blood screening, individualised protocols and continuous intraoperative monitoring. We use multiparameter monitoring including oxygen saturation, ECG, blood pressure, body temperature and end-tidal COโ‚‚ for every anaesthetic procedure.

Absolutely. We discuss all treatment costs transparently before any procedure is performed. For planned procedures, we provide a written estimate. In emergency situations, costs are discussed as soon as the patient is stable. There are never any hidden charges, and nothing proceeds without your informed consent.

Yes โ€” we encourage owners to be present during consultations. This helps us gather a more complete history, allows us to explain our findings in real time, and is reassuring for your pet. For procedures requiring sedation or anaesthesia, pets are admitted and owners typically collect them once they have fully recovered.

Your pet should fast (no food) for 8โ€“12 hours before anaesthesia. Fresh water can generally be provided until 4 hours before the procedure. We will give you specific pre-operative instructions at the time of booking and during the pre-surgical consultation, tailored to your pet's procedure and health status.
