A microchip is the single most reliable form of pet identification. Unlike collars and tags, it cannot fall off, wear out or be removed. A microchip is compulsory for registering pets in Dubai and is the universal requirement for international pet travel. At OC Pets we implant ISO-standard microchips, handle registration with the appropriate authorities and manage the full pet passport and travel documentation process for any destination worldwide.
How Microchipping Works
A microchip is a tiny passive transponder approximately the size of a grain of rice, implanted by injection into the subcutaneous tissue over the shoulders. The procedure is fast and no more uncomfortable than a standard vaccination. The chip has no battery and emits no signal on its own; it is read by a scanner that activates it with a brief radio frequency pulse.
All modern microchips comply with the ISO 11784/11785 standard, ensuring global compatibility. Any veterinary clinic, shelter or authority worldwide with a standard scanner can read the chip and identify the registered owner.
UAE Registration Requirements
Dubai Municipality requires all dogs and cats to be microchipped and registered. The microchip number is linked to your contact information, your pet's vaccination record and their licence. Keeping registration details up to date is the owner's responsibility.
When you rehome, move address or change contact details, the registry record must be updated. We guide you through the registration process at the time of chipping and can advise on updating existing registrations.

Pet Passport and International Travel Documentation
A pet passport is the official document that accompanies your pet for international travel. It contains the microchip number, vaccination history, official health certificates and treatment records. Different destination countries have very different requirements regarding timing of vaccinations, rabies titre tests, parasite treatment and quarantine.
EU destinations, the UK and Australia have some of the most complex and strictly enforced import requirements. We provide comprehensive travel preparation services and prepare all documentation to the exact standard required for your destination. Start this process at least two to three months before your travel date.
What If Your Pet Is Found Without ID
A microchipped pet found without its owner can be scanned at any veterinary clinic, shelter or animal authority and returned to the registered owner within minutes. An unchipped pet with no collar has no connection back to you.
We strongly advise chipping all pets, including purely indoor animals, because accidental escapes happen. The difference between a microchipped and unchipped pet often determines whether they come home.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does microchipping hurt?
The implantation is a brief injection using a slightly larger needle than a standard vaccine, comparable in feel to blood collection. Most dogs and cats show little to no reaction. The procedure takes seconds. No anaesthesia is required and it can be done during a routine consultation or vaccination appointment.
Can a microchip be removed or does it move?
Microchips occasionally migrate from the implantation site but rarely move far. Removal requires surgical intervention and is almost never performed outside very specific circumstances. The chip is encased in biocompatible glass and is considered permanent.
My dog was already microchipped when I adopted it. What do I do?
Have the chip scanned to confirm the number and existing registration details. Then update the registration to your name and contact details, or register it if it is not yet registered. We can scan your pet and help with the transfer of registration.
How far in advance do I need to book travel documentation?
Start the process at least 8 to 12 weeks before your planned travel date. Some countries require specific timing windows for vaccinations and treatments that are impossible to meet at short notice. Call us as soon as you know your travel date.
Is a UAE pet licence the same as a passport?
No. A UAE pet licence (Dubai Municipality) is a local registration document. A pet passport is an international travel document used when crossing borders with your pet. Both are important but serve entirely different purposes. We assist with both.
