Parasite Prevention

Year-round protection against fleas, ticks, mites, worms and heartworm, tailored to your pet's life in the UAE.

OC Pets Parasite Prevention in Dubai

Dubai's warm climate means parasites are active year-round with no winter cold to reduce populations. Fleas, ticks, sandflies, intestinal worms and heartworm are all present in the UAE and all pose genuine health risks to pets and, in some cases, to the people who live with them. Effective parasite prevention is not about applying any product regularly; it is about applying the right product at the right interval for your specific pet's lifestyle and exposure level.

Flea and Tick Prevention

Fleas cause skin disease, allergic dermatitis and in heavy infestations can cause significant anaemia, particularly in small or young animals. Ticks transmit serious diseases including ehrlichiosis and babesiosis, both of which are present in the UAE and can be fatal without treatment.

Modern monthly or three-monthly oral and spot-on treatments are highly effective and safe when used at correct doses. We recommend products based on your pet's weight, age, health status and whether they live with children or other animals.

Intestinal Parasite Control

Roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms and giardia are common in UAE pets. Many infections are acquired from the environment or other animals without any visible signs. Puppies and kittens are particularly vulnerable; they are often born with roundworm infection acquired before birth.

Regular deworming on a schedule appropriate for age and exposure is essential. Fecal screening for parasites is offered in-house and recommended when there is diarrhoea, weight loss or known exposure risk. Treating based on a schedule alone is far less accurate than treating based on what is actually present.

Heartworm Prevention

Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is transmitted by mosquitoes and is present in the UAE. Adult worms live in the heart and major pulmonary vessels and cause progressive, often fatal heart and lung disease. Treatment of established heartworm infection is complex, costly and carries significant risk.

Prevention is far simpler. Monthly oral preventives are available and extremely effective when given consistently. We recommend annual heartworm testing alongside prevention to catch any treatment failures early and to confirm prevention is working.

Sandfly and Leishmania Risk

Leishmania is a serious protozoal disease transmitted by sandflies and is present in parts of the Middle East and surrounding regions. It causes progressive organ disease and is very difficult to cure once established. For dogs spending time outdoors at dusk or in endemic areas, the risk is real.

Vaccination against Leishmania is available, and sandfly repellent use between dusk and dawn significantly reduces exposure. We assess individual risk based on your dog's lifestyle and advise on appropriate preventive measures.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does my dog need parasite prevention?

It depends on the product. Some flea and tick treatments are monthly, others three-monthly. Intestinal dewormers are typically given every one to three months depending on lifestyle. Heartworm prevention is monthly. We create an annual schedule at the consultation so you have one clear plan rather than multiple overlapping products to track independently.

Can I buy parasite treatments over the counter in Dubai?

Some products are available without a prescription, but quality, dosing and suitability vary enormously. Using dog products on cats (permethrin toxicity is a common and potentially fatal example) can cause serious harm. We recommend vet-prescribed products and can advise on cost-effective options.

My pet is indoor-only. Does it still need parasite prevention?

Yes, especially for fleas. Fleas can be brought in on clothing, shoes or by visiting animals. Heartworm is transmitted by a mosquito bite, which can happen indoors. Indoor cats should be on a basic prevention protocol including deworming and flea prevention.

Are the prevention products safe for puppies and kittens?

Yes, but age and weight restrictions apply. Most products are licensed from 8 weeks of age and above a minimum body weight. We always check age and weight before recommending a specific product.

What are the signs that my pet has a worm infection?

Many worm infections produce no obvious signs. When present, signs can include a pot-bellied appearance in young animals, visible worms or segments in faeces, scooting, diarrhoea, vomiting, weight loss and a dull coat. Annual fecal screening is a more reliable detection method than waiting for symptoms.
