Why Vaccination Matters
Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective interventions in veterinary medicine. By stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies, vaccines protect pets against serious โ sometimes fatal โ infectious diseases without requiring exposure to the actual pathogen. In Dubai's year-round warm climate, disease pressure from certain pathogens remains elevated, making consistent vaccination especially important.
Core Vaccines for Dogs
- DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza) โ Given from 6โ8 weeks, with boosters every 3โ4 weeks until 16 weeks, then at 1 year, then every 1โ3 years.
- Rabies โ Legally required in the UAE. First dose from 12 weeks, booster at 1 year, then every 1โ3 years depending on vaccine type.
- Leptospirosis โ Strongly recommended in Dubai due to environmental exposure. Annual boosters required.
- Kennel Cough (Bordetella/Parainfluenza) โ Recommended for dogs exposed to other dogs (parks, boarding, grooming). Annual or bi-annual.
Core Vaccines for Cats
- FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia) โ Primary series from 8 weeks, then annually or every 3 years.
- Rabies โ Required for travel; recommended for all cats in the UAE.
- FeLV (Feline Leukaemia Virus) โ Recommended for cats with outdoor access or contact with other cats.
Puppy & Kitten Vaccination Schedule
- 6โ8 weeks: First DHPP or FVRCP + deworming
- 10โ12 weeks: Second DHPP or FVRCP + Lepto/FeLV if indicated
- 14โ16 weeks: Third DHPP or FVRCP + Rabies
- 12โ16 months: First adult boosters
- Ongoing: As per individual risk assessment (annually or every 3 years)
Travel Certificates & UAE Requirements
Pets entering or re-entering the UAE require a valid health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian and endorsed by the relevant authority. For UAE residents travelling abroad, destination-country requirements must be met โ which may include microchipping, rabies titre tests, tapeworm treatment and specific documentation timelines. We recommend consulting our team at least 3โ4 weeks before travel.
Vaccine Side Effects
Most pets tolerate vaccines well. Mild lethargy, slight swelling at the injection site or reduced appetite for 24โ48 hours is normal. Rarely, allergic reactions may occur โ signs include facial swelling, difficulty breathing or collapse. These require immediate veterinary attention. Notify us if your pet has had any previous vaccine reactions.
